In this post, we will be discussing Home Remedies for Diarrhea that are, in many cases, as effective or more effective than antibiotics, without the risks of problems like DNA Damage, tendon rupture, Autoimmune Diseases, or even death. In this 4 part series on Cipro for Diarrhea, we’ll discuss various aspects of how the dangerous Fluoroquinolone antibiotics can harm you. If you are unfamiliar with the damaging effects of these antibiotics, please read the Introduction to the Fluoroquinlone Antibiotics to see why you should avoid these drugs whenever possible.
This 4 part series consists of the following:
In Part 3, Cipro for Diarrhea Treatment, we discussed the use and dangers of Cipro, also called Ciprofloxacin, as a common pharmaceutical treatment for severe diarrhea, and why using Cipro for this purpose is a bad idea.
In Part 2 we discussed how antibiotics can lead to a lifelong intestinal infection called Clostridium Difficile.
Oral rehydration means ‘drinking liquids’, often these liquids are not just water, but drinks, such as Pedialyte and Gatorade, that contain electrolytes and minerals to replace those lost in diarrhea. As long as one is otherwise healthy and can keep drinking enough liquids with electrolytes to prevent dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, diarrhea rarely becomes dangerous, and usually stops by itself in a few days. This is one of the most common home remedies for diarrhea.
As we pointed out in Part 3, oral rehydration was the strategy suggested for even severe watery diarrhea in infants by a research doctor noting the Bizarre Brain Condition affecting dozens of children after treatment with Ciprofloxacin.
Probiotics as Home Remedies for Diarrhea
Ironically, even as Dr. Gorbach in Part 3 was lamenting not using antibiotics to give quick relief of diarrhea, a study on probiotics showed that they ALSO stopped diarrhea a day sooner than placebo 1, giving the same level of relief of acute diarrhea without the danger of lifelong disability or killing off the gut microbiome that can lead to Clostridium Difficile and Candida infections, as well as contributing to autoimmunity.
While oral rehydration therapy works well as one of the home remedies for diarrhea, plain old over-the-counter Pepto Bismol could be given if the patient wants to help reduce the length of time they have diarrhea. Both probiotics and Pepto Bismol have been shown to reduce the duration of diarrhea, and neither have any case reports of lifelong disability or death from appropriate short-term usage 23.
Pepto Bismol has even been used safely in infants for decades 45 and since it can be purchased in any drug store, there is no need for a doctor’s visit or trip to the pharmacy, saving health care dollars.
If you are looking for Home Remedies for Diarrhea, you do have choices before resorting to antibiotics such as the Fluoroquinolones. There is no need to risk disability or even death in order to stop your diarrhea more quickly, a trip to a drug store or the health store, and giving it a few days will usually do the trick. Of course, there are SOME cases of diarrhea that do not respond to these measures and will need medical attention. Those cases should absolutely get the help they need if serious symptoms occur.
However, for anyone otherwise healthy without any serious symptoms, one or more of these Home Remedies for Diarrhea should be sufficient to tide one over until diarrhea ends by itself. They are recommended by many doctors, and are research-proven to be effective. Certainly, in most cases, it’s safer than taking a Quinolone antibiotic like Cipro, and usually just as effective.
